I am excited to share my creative process through a behind the scenes case study on my Mombi.io Explainer video. I'll walk you through the major phases of the production pipeline and try to break down how each of them contribute in shaping the final piece.

The Brief

Mombi is a fictional Google counterpart that has a suite of everyday tech products such as an email app, a calendar app, a navigation app etc. With this piece, Mombi aims to create a brand anthem that inspires its viewers with hope and excitement.

Preproduction

Every great explainer video begins with a quality pre production phase. In this phase, I started gathering references, creating moodboards, finding suitable background tracks and bouncing off ideas on visual scripts to come up with a concept that would best fit the overall tone and message of the video.

Storyboards

I started creating some rough sketches for the main frames that would be featured in the video. Sketching out frames coherent to the brand guidelines, references and the moodboards to weave a consistent and seamless story is always a fun exercise for the creative muscle.

Animatic

An animatic is essentially a video with all the rough sketches laid out over the voice-over(or a rough voice over) with background music. Animatics are super important to get an overall sense of the pacing and the flow of the script in a visual fashion. This enabled me to iterate and make edits to the script/sketches, quickly and easily.

Styleframes

I proceeded with taking the set of rough sketches and creating detailed styleframes from them. These styleframes give me a first glimpse of the overall look and feel of the final video. I also split this phase into two passes i.e  a. Illustration and b. Look Development. The illustration pass was about blocking out major shapes and trying different color schemes whereas the look development pass involved adding lights, shadows, textures, glows, gradients etc.

Boardomatic

A boardomatic is simply an animatic but with styleframes instead of the rough sketches. This helps me give everything a final check before I can go to the Animation phase.

Animation

After ensuring that everything is in the right place, I finally began with my favourite part of the entire pipeline, Animation. (yayyy!) I like to animate projects like these in multiple passes, with the first pass blocking out major movements and the following ones gradually adding more detail and density. Breathing flair and personality into your designs through movement and seeing your creative vision finally come to life, is always super fun.

Sound Design

After getting a picture lock, I proceed with overlaying and mixing some stock audio sfx (pops, wooshes, dings etc) to enhance the overall viewing experience.
